Hmmm, I kind of figured based on his upbringing, he probably wanted to feel like he belonged with the bad guys at first. He never fit in at home or at school, so I always thought he wanted to be a death eater. Then when he got too deep into the evilness of it, he freaked out. Also, him and Dumbledore seem to have a really distinct bond. I almost think maybe Dumbledore saved Snapes life when he tried to get out of the Death eaters.

And I'd be a bastard too if I had to put up with Harry getting away with freakin murder every other day - not to mention the apparently unprovoked harassment from the Maraders throughout school, of which Harry represents a daily reminder. For (most recent) example, I'd think under any other circumstances someone (ie, someone other than Harry) would get in serious trouble for going into/invading a pensive that wasn't theirs and that they didn't have permission to enter (like Harry did in book 5 - after having already done it once to Dumbledore and knowing it was wrong). That's some serious sh!t there.... like mind-rape or something. [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img]

If you want to talk about mind rape, how about how hard Snape is on Harry during occlumency lessons. Snape was totally enjoying seeing Harry being chased up a tree by Dudley. Also, it takes a pretty angry guy to hold a 15 year grudge against a guy who saved your life, even if you didn't like him before. AND, what about the time when Hermione was jinxed and her teeth started growing out of her mouth. Snape said, "I see no difference." What kind of teacher or adult says that to a 13 year old!!!

Granted, Harry is a punk for looking in the pensive, but as if you wouldn't do the same thing!! I mean, it's SNAPE!!! [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Ah, but there was a legitimate reason behind pushing him so hard. In fact, Harry ended up, in effect, getting Sirius killed b/c he didn't take the lessons more seriously and LV got in his mind and planted the images that ended up leading everyone to the end battle - the one where Sirius gets killed (or at least goes "through the curtain" [img]wink.gif[/img] ). Dumbledore stressed to Harry how important those lessons were, and you know Dumbledore knew what was going on/how hard he was being pushed, yet Harry just blew them off anyway.

I side with the theory that Snape is an agent of Dumbledore. The way Harry's father treated him when he was younger just makes it easier for him to come off as a bad guy as he takes it out on Potter which therefore makes his cover seem even more genuine.
